Why Messi fails with Argentina

After Argentina's first match at the 2018 World Cup, Lionel Messi came under a lot of criticism after his performance missing a crucial penalty to win the game for his side. The draw against Iceland came a day after one of the greatest individual performances in a World Cup by Messi's rival, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid winger scored his 51st career hat trick in his sides 3 - 3 draw against Spain.

In Argentina's opening World Cup match, Messi tried to drive his team to victory but in the end his efforts were in vain. During the match it became obvious on why Messi has struggled with his international side, often trying to do too much and not putting trust into his team mates.

There was a moment in the match where Messi beat two players with ease and drilled the ball into Maximiliano Meza. As he continued his run into the box, expecting the return of the ball, Meza passed backwards towards his defence much to the frustration of Messi and the Argentina supporters. This went on to happen another four times throughout the match. Messi needs to understand he is not playing with his club side which is full of some of the best technial players in the world.

Messi has played with some of the greatest players of all time at Barcelona including Ronaldinho, Xavi and Andres Iniesta. But if Messi wants to be successful with his home nation, then he needs to appreciate the fact that his national side have a different style of play to his domestic one.

Both Messi and Ronaldo are seen as their nations only hope to take them to international glory. Ronaldo grabbed his Portugal team mates by the scruff of the neck and showcased his leadership quality taking Portugal to European triumph in 2016. Messi is yet to take his national side to glory, coming closest in the 2014 World Cup losing in the final against Germany.
